  • CSS Winner Site of the Day
  • Inc. Magazine Fastest Growing Businesses
  • Techpoint MIRA Award
  • Most large corporations have programs for social responsibility and community involvement. This is a great idea for a small business too.

What you will gain from supporting a charity or non-profit organization:

    • The opportunity to give back
    • Community support and good will – People are more apt to support businesses they feel are part of their world.
    • The opportunity to support causes you believe in – It is great if you can tie your business purpose to a particular charity but if you can’t simply pick a charity that you are passionate about.
    • Company morale – This can boost company morale by bringing employees together to support something that is separate from the office
    • Marketing and business strategy – This is a way for you to reach out and connect with community members on a different platform

    Choosing the Charity

Small businesses should choose just one charity to support. It would be great if the charity is related to the business. If not, you should talk with your employees and see what charities/causes they feel passionate about and choose one of those. Also, look for charities that will give you meaningful exposure to a large number of influential people. The more exposure your small business can get, the better. Keep your target audience in mind. For example, if your business buys and sells property then a good charity would be Habitat for Humanity. Make sure the charity you choose is a legitimate charity. Check them out on Better Business Bureau and other sites to make sure your donation will be used correctly.

    Ways to Raise Money

There are many ways on how you can raise money for your charity; here are a few of my ideas:
    • Silent auction
    • 50/50 raffle
    • Community yard sale
    • Golf event
    • Bake sale
    • Spaghetti dinner
    • Car wash
    • Caned food drive if your charity is a food pantry

Save a small portion of profits – save a little bit of your profits every month and make monthly donations to your charity or make one large donation at the end of the year.

Remember you can raise money for your charity anyway you can think of. It all depends on how much time and resources you have to put into the event.

Make sure to vocalize your involvement with your charity.

Include the charity event on any type of company newsletter, social media sites and marketing materials. Write blog posts about your involvement and how others can help the charity your company supports. Use word of mouth to tell family and friends about your involvement. Your company could also include a link to the charity website on your companies’ website. You can also ask that the charity to include your business name on their marketing materials.
What charity initiatives is your small business involved in?
